THE MOMENT

DIRECTED BY AIDAN ZIMIRI

The highly anticipated film by Charli XCX & DIrector Aidan Zimiri was like the Brat era on … ketamine; sprinkled with a little bit of DMT. It was giving Gaspar Noé, it was giving a Harmony Korrine acid trip. I was going into the film relatively blind, besides following Charli’s music. The opening of the film gave me excitment and a thrill, and I was glued to my seat; ready for a wild ride. However, not only did the opening sequence not match any other portion of the film; it was almost as if that was the peak, and the DMT high, and the rest of the film was the depressing, soulless come down. We will get to that in a bit, but first let’s talk about this event.

We attended a special premiere screening of The Moment in Brooklyn, NY with both Charli and Aidan in attendance. From the moment we entered the building, it was as if we were at a one night only Charli XCX show. It seemed that everyone in NYC had arrived, and the energy was something I havent seen in years for a film event. Most of the attendees were decked out in Charli merch, Charli head to toe black and the signature Brat Green.

The issue I had with the film, to put it bluntly, was just …. not very good. It felt hollow, rushed, a cash grab, the very antithesis of what the films plot was. It almost felt like an adult version of a Disney Channel Original Movie, starring the current teeny bopper pop star of the time. Granted, there were some comedic moments including that of a one scene encounter with Kylie Jenner and a frazeled Charli. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to sustain this film. The writing was lackluster and felt like it was written by someone who is not a writer. Aidan said it was written in a few days; and well… it shows.

The film gave one final attempt to redeem itself at the end with a fallout between Charli and her previous longtime assistant, a scene that should have been a tear jerker, but instead felt like a run of the mill climax scene from a Lifetime film.

I would say skip this one, even if you are a fan of Charli’s music. I am, and I coudn’t wait for this to be over. There was nothing memorable about this film.

Sorry Charli, but Everything here was not romantic. Everything was embarrasing.
