ERUPCJA

Dir. By Pete Ohs

When we left the theater in January after viewing The Moment, we were left with this hole inside of us, desperately wanting much much more from Charli XCX. Well, our wish has been granted with ERUPCJA. The new independent film, a collaborative effort from Writer / Director Pete Ohs, Writer/ Costar Will Madden, and Writer / Producer & Stars Jeremy O. Harris & Charli XCX.

The film on its own was an indie masterpiece. A commentary on a relationship that just doesn’t feel right; and choosing avoidance over confrontation. It harkened back to the whimsy ofAmélie with a dash of Trainspotting, and the Where’s Waldo of Anora.

We were joined by Charli XCX, Pete Ohs, Jeremy O’Harris and Will Madden for an early screening at the NYC staple Angelika Film Center in Greenwich Village.

Charli gave a passionate speech on the process of the film, and how she came to be its breakout star. She joked that she was hogging the microphone, and insessiently enamoring on; but that she hasn’t been given a microphone in two months, and declared “I’M BACK!” We can attest that with this performance, she officially is.

However, she’s not back with the same Brat era Charli that the masses have grown to love; she’s back with a new, refreshed aura; and the true passion and seriousness that every true actor possesses. So much so, that we are left scratching our heads thinking …

“ was she just PLAYING a pop star all these years? Was the Charli XCX of the Brat era simply just a role she was playing?”

We were pleasantly surprised at how grateful we were for her performance and effort In this film. I believe Charli has officially found her space in the performance art world, and I for one, couldn’t be more thrilled, and excited to see what projects she chooses to do next.

With a sold out, packed house at the early evening showing on Thursday night; it was a mixed bag of film goers. Many were there for the film, many were there simply as BRAT era Charli Stans, and it was ever so apparent. When the film was over, there was a lot of chatter like …

“ I love Charli’s music, but I didn’t really like this film.”

or a comment I heard behind me of …

“ Yeah! it was great. I fell asleep.”

Let me set the record straight, and be super clear. Dear the chronically online, pop culture obsessed, commercial “art” lovers … This is not ‘THE MOMENT’, and thank god it’s not!

The harsh criticism from the BRAT Stans, was just reassurance that this film was extremely well done, and the correct, strategic pivot that Charli needed to successfully launch a serious career in independent film as not only an actress, but as a writer and a producer.

We only have high expectations for this masterful film; and are overjoyed by the talent Charli brings.

Welcome to the Silver Screen, Charli! It truly is great to have you here!
